In March 2025, the book “World Cities of the Low Countries: Urban History of the Netherlands and Belgium” was published, in which various authors, including SHOC historians Anne Winter and Klaas Van Gelder, wrote about fifty cities that were pre-eminently world cities. Almost a year and several reviews later, this book is nominated for the Kleio Klasseprijs, awarded by the VGN (trade union of history teachers) for the best educational history book.
Written from a socio-economic, political and cultural perspective, linked to current events and beautifully illustrated, this book is suitable for classroom discussion.
Voting is open until 1 March 2026 via this website: https://www.vgnkleio.nl/actueel/stem-voor-de-kleio-klasseprijs-2/.
The winner will be announced at the VGN conference on 13 March at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
