These days it is slightly quieter in the corridors between offices, and at the lunch table there is just a little less exuberant laughter. Indeed, last week Heidi Deneweth closed the door of the VUB for good. Heidi’s absence takes some getting used to, both for her and for us. Heidi obtained a PhD in history at the VUB in 2008 and had been working as a postdoctoral researcher and research professor at the research group HOST, then SHOC, since 2012. Throughout those years, she was a stalwart within the research group, a driving force who inspired and stimulated others both scientifically and personally.
Of course, we did not let Heidi just leave. On Tuesday 20 February, we invited friends and (former) colleagues to the VUB to wave goodbye to Heidi and celebrate together. We honoured her (literally), we looked back on a rich career and praised Heidi's qualities and merits as a scientist and colleague. Going out with a bang, Heidi deserves nothing less! We wish her the best of luck with the challenges still in her path, and our doors will always remain open to her.
