SHOC member Anna Derhaeg and co-author Kaat Wils (University of Leuven) have published a new article, based on Anna's Master's thesis. In ‘Power relations in the delivery room: Anaesthesia in Belgian obstetrics between 1880 and 1900’, the authors examine how anaesthesia contributed to the shifting power relations in the Belgian delivery room in the late nineteenth century. The source material consists of detailed case studies published in Belgian medical journals. These sources provide systematic insights into the interactions between doctors and pregnant women and show how anaesthesia not only provided pain relief, but could also strengthen the doctor's position in the delivery room.
